Day 09
Destination Shanghai
Activities Walking tour in one of Shanghai's most famous districts, the classic Huangpu Area (not incl. car today, walking for approx. 4 km. ) ATT: Walking distance and time is just for reference. It is subject to clients' interests, road conditions, traffic, hotel location, unexpected situations and so on. We start to walk from the hotel. As we enter Chinatown we also enter an entirely different world. As the foreign powers controlled the most important parts of Shanghai the Chinese stayed in their own part of the city, the old Shanghai. In here they could live like they wanted, undisturbed by the Western influence. Chinatown is a great example of the Shanghainese approach to life. In Chinatown we visit the City God Temple, a very active and lively temple where we get insight into Chinese belief systems. Both Daoism and Confucianism have had enormous impact on the China we see today, and in order to really understand China you need to get under the skin of its original philosophies. Even today, in modern politics, the traces of these influential philosophies are very much evident. Next to the temple we find the Garden of Joy (Yuyuan Garden). An exquisite example of Chinese garden art, this garden is regarded as one of the finest in this part of the country. We will have some free time in the Chinatown before walking (approx. 2km, 40 mins) to Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street (no free time there, you could explore by yourselves during the free time), and continue (approx 10 mins) to the hotel. The rest of the day is free.

Our Hotel Policy:

Keeping our guests' comfort in mind, we prefer to stay in a 3* or 4* hotel in or close to the attraction, rather than a 4* or 5* hotel much further away. Genuine China Tours' all-encompassing hotel policy is that we will never pick a hotel only because of its price. All our partner hotels must live up to a strict quality test that includes: 1. Geographical location - the location of our chosen hotel is of great importantce, both in large cities, where traffic congestion can play a vital role in the handling of the tour, and also on tours to remote villages, where the right choice of village or hotel can mean a world of difference to the tour. 2. Quality of hotel - including room size and cleanliness, quality of breakfast, ease of getting in/out and more. 3. Local environment - local environment should include local sights (when possible), be in the vicinity of local markets/night markets (if any) and have access to shops and convenience stores (if any). 4. Design and layout of hotel - we prefer hotels with history and atmosphere, especially if these have relevance with the sight(s) at the destination. 5. Value for money - any hotel must pass requirements 1-3 and 5. If a hotel passes all five requirements it becomes a Priority Hotel.
